Former NFL player LeSean McCoy hosts groundbreaking for Harrisburg apartment building
HARRISBURG, Pa. — WGAL
Harrisburg native and former Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy was back in the Susquehanna Valley on Friday.
He helped break the ground on new apartments that the firm he owns, Vice Capital, is building in Harrisburg.
The project is called Savoy, and it's going to be located on Sixth Street across from the new federal courthouse.
"It means so much to me because I go different places, and I meet so many different people, and they know me as the ballplayer from the other state – but I come home. This is where I'm from," McCoy said.
The project includes 48 new apartments, with 10 of them being affordable housing.
McCoy said backing this project was a way to give back to the community and a chance to serve as a role model beyond his football career.
"I could impact so many young people in the community. Just imagine if you have a bad living situation and you see it getting better and better and better. That's what I want to be part of, that change," McCoy said.
McCoy is working with a Wormleysburg-based construction company on the project.
"We're really focused on those jobs being from companies that are here locally, not just in the city but the surrounding area," said Jonathan Bowser, the president and CEO of Steelworks Construction.
"Making a change in people's lives, in the kids' lives, the next generation, that's a hall of fame career right there," McCoy said.
The project is expected to cost about $9.5 million. Dauphin County and Harrisburg are expected to make some contributions through Vice Capital will pay for the project primarily through debt financing.
